New Package Travel Directive – International Conference and an upgraded edition https://publications.eshte.pt/dir/ccnptd/ in October 2026

2026 marks 10 years since the inaugural ESHTE | INATEL conference, held on 10th and 11th October 2016 https://tourismlaw.pt/eshte-and-tourism-law/

The New Package Travel Directive, which inspired the 2016 conference, remains a key focus of the event in Portugal, scheduled from 9th to 14th October 2026.

We encourage interested parties to submit comments on articles or sections of articles of the NPTD that are not affected by the ongoing reform until 31st March.

If an article or section is impacted by the reform, an additional deadline will be provided.

Update note:

The amendments to the New Package Travel Directive lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2026/1024/oj/eng are approved by Directive (EU) 2026/1024,  and this will be the central theme of our international conference, which will be held in a hybrid format, as has been the case since the pandemic, on 12 and 13 October 2026.

Prior to this, the second CPLP tourism law congress will take place, with the launch of the hardcover publication, available in Open Access, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the ESHTE | INATEL conferences, the 30th anniversary of the CPLP, and the centenary of the Portuguese Bar Association.

Although accommodation is booked, there are concerns about air travel, including high costs that may discourage travel to Portugal and fuel availability instability.

Therefore:

The conference will take place on 12 and 13 October, either exclusively online if the international situation worsens, or in person if it normalises, as we all hope. A decision should be made in the first week of September.

The goal is to update the Collective Commentary about the New Package Travel Directive (https://tourismlaw.pt/books/). Colleagues may choose one of the options:

1) Update their commentary, as in the following example by Michael Wukoschitz http://files.tourismlaw.pt/14NPTD-Price-Reduction-and-Compensation-for-Damages-according-to-the-New-PTD-by-Michael-Wukoschitz/, incorporating doctrine produced in the meantime and CJEU decisions;

2) Annotate a new article (given the inclusive nature of the publication, several authors may annotate the same article, thus providing different perspectives);

3) The topic to develop is better suited to an article for the International Journal of Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Law (IJTTHL).

There will also be a series of seminars on NPTD and other topics.
